About the Royal Enfield Bullet Classic and Continental GT

Royal Enfield traces the Bullet name back to 1932, but the 500 cc machines represented here belong to the much later Unit Construction Engine era. Royal Enfield introduced the UCE platform in the late 2000s to combine the traditional long-stroke single-cylinder character with a unitized gearbox, modern lubrication and electronic fuel injection. Its official company history notes that the Classic 500 began European export in 2008 as an EFI, Euro III-compliant model, establishing the basic architecture that would continue into the later Euro IV generation. See Royal Enfield's official company history.

The 2017 Bullet EFI and Bullet Classic versions in this publication use the 499 cm³ air-cooled long-stroke single with an 84 × 90 mm bore and stroke, 8.5:1 compression ratio and electronic fuel injection. A wet multi-plate clutch, five-speed constant-mesh gearbox and chain final drive retain the simple mechanical layout associated with the Bullet family. In Euro IV form, the platform also incorporates the emissions and control hardware documented in this publication, including EVAP, an engine-management system with oxygen sensing and diagnostics, and ABS. Together these features make the bikes a useful example of a Euro IV 500 cc EFI single retaining traditional Royal Enfield chassis and engine character while adding modern regulatory systems.

The Continental GT shares the broad UCE single-cylinder family but uses a 535 cm³ version with an 87 × 90 mm bore and stroke. Royal Enfield reintroduced the Continental GT as an all-new café racer in 2013, using a cradle frame designed by Harris Performance and a 535 cc UCE engine. The Euro IV specification listed here retains the 8.5:1 compression ratio, electronic fuel injection and five-speed gearbox, while pairing them with café-racer ergonomics, 18-inch wheels, Brembo-style hydraulic disc braking hardware and a more sporting chassis setup. Royal Enfield's official timeline identifies the 2013 model as the return of the Continental GT after a 48-year gap from its original production café racer.

The 2017 model year sits near a major transition point for both product lines. Royal Enfield unveiled the new 650 cc Interceptor and Continental GT twins in 2017, creating a clear generation break from the earlier 535 cc single-cylinder GT. The company's official history later records the end of 500 cc UCE production in 2020, closing the long-running single-cylinder 500 chapter represented by the Bullet and Classic families. That sequence places these Euro IV machines between the earlier Euro III UCE generation and the newer twin-cylinder and next-generation single-cylinder platforms that followed.

For related documentation, browse the Royal Enfield catalog, the Bullet category, or the Continental GT category. This listing is based specifically on factory publication 888569, dated February 2017, which states that it is for Euro IV Bullet EFI, Bullet Classic EFI and Continental GT models sold in the UK and European countries. The 301-page source contains no later-dated revision or 2018-2020 supplement, so the directly verified catalog year is 2017.
