Royal Enfield Classic 500 & 350 Service Manual (2009)

Royal Enfield introduced the retro-styled Classic during its transition to the Unit Construction Engine era. The company’s official history records that the Classic 500 was being exported to Europe in 2008 and that the Classic went on sale in India on both 350 cc and 500 cc UCE platforms in 2009. The Classic 500 in this 2009 factory manual uses a 499 cc air-cooled single-cylinder engine with an 84 × 90 mm bore and stroke, 8.5:1 compression ratio and electronic fuel injection controlled by an Engine Management System. The manual specifies 27.2 hp at 5,250 rpm and 41.3 Nm at 4,500 rpm. It also documents the ECU, injector, sensors, fuel pump, oxygen feedback and diagnostic procedures used by the EFI system.

The Classic 350 shares the same basic long-stroke UCE layout but uses a 346 cc engine with a 70 × 90 mm bore and stroke, the same 8.5:1 compression ratio and a CV carburetor rather than EFI. Factory figures list 19.6 hp at 5,250 rpm and 28 Nm at 4,000 rpm. Both motorcycles use a five-speed constant-mesh gearbox, wet multi-plate clutch, chain final drive, telescopic hydraulic front fork and twin gas-charged rear shock absorbers. Styling remained deliberately traditional, with the sprung solo-seat look, enclosed headlamp nacelle and rounded tank associated with the Classic line, while the chassis and service systems were contemporary for the period. The manual covers a 280 mm hydraulic front disc, 153 mm rear drum, electric and kick starting, hydraulic tappets, an automatic decompressor and an automatic primary-chain tensioner. The 500 and 350 differ most clearly in fuel delivery and some engine, clutch, final-drive and electrical specifications, which is why the factory manual provides model-specific procedures and separate wiring diagrams.

Later Classics evolved through emissions, braking and equipment changes, and Royal Enfield eventually replaced the original UCE-based 350 with the all-new Classic 350 generation in 2021.
