Yamaha FZ6-SS/SSC Service Manual (2004)

Yamaha introduced the FZ6 platform for the 2004 model year as a new-generation 600cc middleweight built to combine everyday usability with sport-bike performance. Yamaha's contemporary launch material described the European FZ6-S Fazer and FZ6-N as the first full model change in six years for the FZS600 Fazer line. The new platform used an engine developed directly from the YZF-R6, paired with a newly designed CF aluminum die-cast frame. Yamaha's 2003 launch announcement details that development background and the model's role as an all-round road motorcycle.

The U.S.-market FZ6-SS and California-spec FZ6-SSC covered by this manual use Yamaha model codes 5VX3 and 5VX4 respectively. Their 600 cm³ liquid-cooled, four-stroke DOHC engine is a forward-inclined inline four with a 65.5 x 44.5 mm bore and stroke and a 12.2:1 compression ratio. Electronic fuel injection replaced the carburetion used on the earlier FZS600 generation, while the six-speed transmission and chain final drive retained the conventional middleweight road-bike layout. The result was a 600cc fuel-injected middleweight sport motorcycle with a broader street-focused character than the supersport machine from which its engine architecture was derived.

The chassis combined 17-inch cast aluminum wheels, dual 298 mm front brake discs, a 245 mm rear disc, a telescopic fork and a gas-oil rear shock. Yamaha also equipped the model with a 19.4-liter fuel tank, digital instrumentation, electronic self-diagnosis and a compact under-seat exhaust layout. These features placed the first-generation FZ6 between pure supersport machinery and conventional commuter or touring motorcycles, continuing the Fazer concept of combining responsive handling with practical road use.

This factory service manual is the first-edition U.S. manual issued in November 2003 for the 2004 FZ6-SS/FZ6-SSC, part number LIT-11616-17-50. It provides workshop procedures for maintenance, chassis, engine, cooling, fuel injection and electrical systems, plus troubleshooting and the factory wiring diagram.
