About the Yamaha XJ6S and XJ6SA

Yamaha introduced the XJ6S Diversion and ABS-equipped XJ6SA Diversion for the 2009 European model year, with sales beginning in February 2009. Yamaha developed the platform around an “Easy-handling Pleasure Sports Bike” concept aimed at riders who wanted an accessible middleweight for commuting, everyday road use and touring without the sharper focus of a supersport machine. The Diversion sat alongside the YZF-R6 and FZ6 in Yamaha's 600 cc European range, but its emphasis was on controllability, comfort and approachable performance. Yamaha's official 2009 XJ6 Diversion launch release documents the model's original positioning and technical specification.

The engine is a 599.8 cm³ liquid-cooled DOHC inline-four with electronic fuel injection, a 65.5 × 44.5 mm bore and stroke and a 12.2:1 compression ratio. Although the bore and stroke dimensions were shared with the contemporary FZ6, Yamaha redesigned the cylinder head, crankcase, intake and exhaust systems and clutch to give the XJ6 a different low- and mid-range character. The throttle-body diameter was reduced to 32 mm and valve overlap was narrowed to improve response in everyday riding. Power passes through a wet multi-disc clutch, six-speed constant-mesh transmission and chain final drive, giving the bike the character of a 600cc fuel-injected middleweight rather than a detuned supersport replica.

The chassis followed the same practical approach. Yamaha used a steel diamond frame with the engine rigidly mounted as a stressed member, 17-inch cast wheels, a 41 mm conventional telescopic fork and a monocross rear suspension system. The standard XJ6S has a factory wet weight of 211 kg, while the ABS-equipped XJ6SA is listed at 216 kg. Braking is handled by twin 298 mm front discs and a 245 mm rear disc. The XJ6SA adds Yamaha's anti-lock braking system with independent front and rear wheel control, hydraulic unit, wheel sensors and self-diagnosis functions, all of which receive dedicated coverage in this factory manual.

The XJ6 Diversion was designed as a faired everyday road bike, combining a compact half-fairing, 785 mm seat height, 17.3-liter fuel tank and relatively upright ergonomics. That package gave it a different role from the naked XJ6 variants and the sportier FZ6, with a stronger focus on commuting, light touring and accessible ownership. The service-manual model codes identify XJ6S 36C1, XJ6SA 36D1 and XJ6SY 36C2, reflecting standard, ABS and regional variations within the same 2009 platform. For related documentation, browse the Yamaha Diversion service manual category.

This listing is based on Yamaha factory publication 36C-28197-E0, first edition January 2009. The manual explicitly identifies the 2009 XJ6S(Y) and XJ6SA and contains the factory procedures for maintenance, chassis, engine, cooling, fuel injection, electrical systems, ABS diagnosis, troubleshooting and wiring. No later model-year supplement sections are included, so the verified catalog applicability is 2009 only rather than the legacy 2009-2016 range.
