Yamaha YZF-R1W / YZF-R1WC Service Manual (2007)

Yamaha introduced the 2007 YZF-R1 as the fifth generation of its liter-class supersport line, presenting the new model at Intermot 2006. Yamaha described the development concept as “the fastest supersport,” but the redesign was broader than a simple power increase. The 2007 machine received a newly designed 998 cc inline-four engine, revised aluminum frame and major electronic intake and throttle-control technology. The North American variants covered by this manual are the YZF-R1W and YZF-R1WC, represented by model codes 4C84 for the U.S. specification and 4C85 for California. The engine is a 998 cm³ liquid-cooled DOHC inline-four with four valves per cylinder, a 77.0 × 53.6 mm bore and stroke and a 12.7:1 compression ratio. Electronic fuel injection uses four Denso injectors and a Mikuni throttle-body assembly. Power is transmitted through a wet multi-disc clutch, constant-mesh six-speed transmission and chain final drive.

A defining feature of this generation was the pairing of Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle, or YCC-T, with the newly introduced Yamaha Chip Controlled Intake, or YCC-I. YCC-T electronically controls throttle-valve opening based on rider input and operating conditions, while YCC-I changes intake-funnel length to support both low-to-midrange response and high-rpm performance. Yamaha described YCC-I as the first electronically controlled variable intake-funnel system used on a production motorcycle. Together these systems made the 2007 R1 a electronically controlled 1000cc supersport motorcycle and marked an important step toward the increasingly sophisticated engine-management systems used on later superbikes.

The chassis also changed substantially. Yamaha used a redesigned aluminum Deltabox frame and revised suspension, while the front braking system adopted dual 310 mm discs with six-piston calipers. Factory specifications list a 1,415 mm wheelbase and 200 kg weight with oil and fuel for the U.S. model. The 2007 platform continued into 2008 in broadly related form, but Yamaha replaced it for 2009 with a sixth-generation YZF-R1 built around a new crossplane-crankshaft engine and a fully redesigned chassis.
