About the Yamaha Fazer
Yamaha introduced the second-generation FZ1 platform in Europe for 2006 as a major redesign of the earlier FZS1000 Fazer. Yamaha described the new machine as a “Real Emotional Roadster,” combining a YZF-R1-derived 998 cm³ engine with a newly designed lightweight aluminum frame and a more compact, aggressive chassis. The semi-cowled version was positioned as a sport/all-rounder alternative built on the same core platform. See Yamaha Motor's official FZ1 launch announcement.
The 2008 factory manual covers FZ1-N, FZ1-NA, FZ1-S and FZ1-SA. All use the same 998 cm³ liquid-cooled DOHC inline-four with a 77.0 × 53.6 mm bore and stroke and an 11.5:1 compression ratio. Four Denso injectors feed the engine through a Mikuni throttle body, while a wet multi-disc clutch, six-speed constant-mesh transmission and chain final drive complete the drivetrain. The result is a distinctly fuel-injected 998 cc supersport-derived roadster platform tuned for strong real-world performance rather than pure racetrack use.
By 2008 the range also included ABS-equipped naked and semi-cowled versions, which are documented in this manual with dedicated ABS circuitry, wheel sensors, hydraulic-unit service procedures, self-diagnosis and fault-code troubleshooting. The standard and ABS versions otherwise share the same basic engine, frame and service architecture. The chassis retains the 43 mm upside-down fork, aluminum frame, 1,460 mm wheelbase and 18-liter fuel tank that defined the second-generation design.
The 2008 model year also marked the platform's official introduction to Japan. Yamaha's Japanese-market launch material again emphasized the balance between supersport-derived performance and usable everyday road manners, noting that the platform had already been established in Europe since 2006. That same release describes the naked and semi-cowled forms as distinct expressions of the same underlying 1,000 cc sports concept. See Yamaha's official 2008 Japanese-market introduction.
For related documentation, browse the Fazer category or the broader Yamaha catalog. This listing is based specifically on factory publication 5D0-28197-E1, First Edition December 2007. The 546-page source contains nine chapters covering general information, specifications, periodic checks, chassis, engine, cooling, fuel injection, electrical systems and troubleshooting, followed by 2008 wiring diagrams for the covered variants. No 2009 supplement is included, so the directly verified catalog applicability is 2008 only.
