About the Buell XB12S and XB9S

Buell had used the Lightning name since the S1 of the mid-1990s, but the modern XB-era streetfighter arrived for the 2003 model year as the XB9S. Based on the XB9R Firebolt’s compact chassis, it replaced clip-ons and sportbike ergonomics with a tubular handlebar, lower footpegs and stripped-back bodywork. The design established the core XB Lightning formula: a very short wheelbase, steep steering geometry, fuel carried inside the aluminum frame, engine oil in the swingarm and Buell’s perimeter-mounted front brake. Cycle World’s original XB9S technical preview documents that launch and the model’s direct relationship to the Firebolt.

For 2004, the XB12S expanded the same concept around Buell’s 1,203 cm³ V-twin. The longer-stroke engine retained the XB chassis but delivered substantially more torque than the 984 cm³ version, strengthening the Lightning’s road-focused character without changing its compact proportions. Both engine families used air-cooled 45-degree pushrod V-twins, Dynamic Digital Fuel Injection, five-speed transmissions and belt final drive, giving the Lightning range a distinctive mechanical identity compared with the multi-cylinder naked sport motorcycles that dominated the class.

The 2005 model year broadened the family substantially. The new XB9SX CityX replaced the earlier standard 984 cm³ Lightning as the urban-oriented small-engine variant, adding translucent bodywork, a headlight grille, handguards, cross-braced handlebar and Pirelli Scorpion Sync tyres. At the same time, the XB12Scg introduced a much lower seat and reduced ground clearance for riders who wanted the 1,203 cm³ engine in a more accessible package, while the XB12S continued as the standard big-bore model. Buell’s 2005 launch material described the CityX and XB12Scg as new additions intended to broaden the Lightning line. See the contemporary Buell 2005 Lightning launch release.

Despite their different ergonomics and styling, the 2005 variants shared the same fuel-in-frame V-twin streetfighter architecture. The XB9SX used the 984 cm³ engine with a 45 mm intake, while the XB12S and XB12Scg used the 1,203 cm³ engine with a 49 mm intake. All three retained the 1,320.8 mm wheelbase, 14.0-litre fuel capacity, 17-inch wheels, belt final drive and the characteristic XB mass-centralization layout. The main chassis distinction was seat height: approximately 777 mm for the CityX, 770 mm for the XB12S and 726 mm for the lowered XB12Scg. Harley-Davidson’s official service information confirms those three 2005 Lightning models and their shared drivetrain specifications: 2005 Lightning specifications.

This factory publication, part 99490-05Y, specifically documents the 2005 XB9SX CityX, XB12S and XB12Scg. It predates later Lightning derivatives such as the XB12Ss Long introduced for 2006. Related manuals are grouped in the Buell Lightning service manual catalog.
