About the Suzuki GSX-R600
Suzuki introduced a substantially redesigned GSX-R600 for 2011, beginning the sixth generation of the model. The new L1 was developed around extensive weight reduction, revised chassis dimensions and improvements to both low-to-midrange engine performance and racetrack handling.
Suzuki reduced wet weight by 9 kg compared with the 2010 model, while shortening the wheelbase by 15 mm to 1,385 mm. The engine itself was approximately 2 kg lighter, with redesigned moving components intended to reduce mechanical losses and improve power delivery. Factory output increased to 92.5 kW (125.8 PS) at 13,500 rpm, with 69.6 Nm of torque at 11,500 rpm.
The chassis received equally important changes. Suzuki introduced a lighter five-piece aluminum twin-spar frame together with a race-developed Showa Big Piston Fork. The front braking system changed to radial-mount Brembo four-piston monobloc calipers, reducing unsprung mass while improving brake feel and control.
The L1 retained Suzuki's 599 cc four-cylinder architecture but increased the compression ratio to 12.9:1 and incorporated revised pistons, camshafts and internal components. Suzuki Drive Mode Selector and a back-torque limiting clutch were retained as key rider-focused systems, while revised close-ratio transmission gearing was intended to improve acceleration and racetrack performance.
The fundamental 2011 design proved unusually long-lived. Suzuki continued using the basic L1-generation platform for subsequent GSX-R600 model years, with later production receiving mainly detail, market and color changes rather than another complete redesign.
