About the Suzuki GSX-R600
Suzuki completely redesigned the GSX-R600 for 2001, replacing the carbureted SRAD-generation motorcycle with a lighter and more compact fuel-injected supersport. The new model shared the racing-focused development philosophy of the contemporary GSX-R750 while receiving a newly designed 599 cc inline-four engine and electronic fuel injection.
The new engine used a shorter-stroke 67.0 × 42.5 mm layout and produced 84.5 kW, or 115 PS, at 13,000 rpm. Suzuki stated that maximum power increased by 4.5 percent compared with the 2000 model. The redesigned engine was also 21 mm shorter, 8 mm narrower and 20 mm lower, reducing engine weight by approximately 4 kg.
Weight reduction extended to the chassis. Suzuki removed roughly another 7 kg from the motorcycle, bringing dry weight down from 174 kg on the previous-generation 2000 model to 163 kg on the new 2001 machine. The compact dimensions and lower mass were intended to improve both acceleration and handling.
The chassis retained the GSX-R family's aluminum twin-spar layout, with fully adjustable suspension, 17-inch radial tires and twin front disc brakes. The six-speed transmission and chain final drive complemented the high-revving engine, while electronic fuel injection represented one of the most important technical changes from the 1997-2000 generation.
The 2002 GSX-R600 K2 continued this second-generation design, retaining the same basic engine, fuel-injection architecture and chassis concept established with the K1.
