About the Suzuki GSX-R600
Suzuki launched the GSX-R600 in 1997 as a middleweight supersport developed alongside the GSX-R750 introduced the previous year. Suzuki states that the 600 was conceived specifically around the growing 600 cc supersport racing category, combining a compact racing-oriented chassis with a high-output four-cylinder engine.
The original model used a liquid-cooled 599 cc inline-four with dual overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder. Suzuki rated it at 78 kW (106 PS) at 12,000 rpm with 65.7 Nm of torque at 10,000 rpm. With a dry weight of only 174 kg and a short 1,390 mm wheelbase, the first GSX-R600 was designed around the same lightweight race-replica philosophy that defined the contemporary GSX-R750.
The motorcycle belonged to Suzuki's SRAD-era GSX-R family, using the Suzuki Ram Air Direct intake concept to improve high-speed intake efficiency. Suzuki describes SRAD as positioning the ram-air intakes near the center of the fairing nose to increase intake efficiency and high-speed engine performance.
Suzuki continued refining the GSX-R600 through the 1998 W, 1999 X and 2000 Y model years. The service manual reflects this development with dedicated W- and X-model update sections covering changes to specifications, engine components, chassis, electrical systems, service data and wiring.
This first-generation carbureted GSX-R600 remained in production through 2000. For 2001, Suzuki introduced a substantially redesigned GSX-R600 with a new compact engine and electronic fuel injection. Suzuki reduced dry weight from 174 kg on the 2000 motorcycle to 163 kg on the new 2001 model, clearly marking the start of the next generation.
