About the Suzuki GSX-R600

Suzuki updated the GSX-R600 for the 2008 model year, building on the compact K6/K7 platform while refining the engine, electronics, brakes, rider controls and styling. The 599 cm³ liquid-cooled inline-four retained its 67.0 × 42.5 mm bore and stroke, but the compression ratio increased from 12.5:1 to 12.8:1. Suzuki also enlarged the ventilation passages between the cylinders and changed the fuel injectors from four-hole to eight-hole designs to improve combustion and low-to-midrange performance.

Maximum output remained 92 kW, or 125 PS, at 13,500 rpm, while maximum torque increased to 68.6 Nm at 11,500 rpm. Suzuki retained the twin-injector fuel system used on the preceding generation, with primary and secondary injectors controlled by the ECM.

A significant addition for 2008 was the Suzuki Drive Mode Selector, which allowed the rider to select between three different engine-power characteristics. The factory service manual contains dedicated descriptions, inspection procedures and diagnostics for the selector. Suzuki also fitted an electronically controlled steering damper and revised the front brake discs, increasing the number of floating pins from eight to twelve.

The bodywork also changed considerably. Suzuki replaced the vertically stacked headlights of the previous generation with a distinctive horizontal three-light arrangement. Adjustable footpegs allowed the rider to alter the riding position, while the chassis retained the 1,400 mm wheelbase and supersport geometry developed for the preceding generation.

The 2009 K9 and 2010 L0 models continued this generation before Suzuki introduced a substantially redesigned GSX-R600 for 2011. Suzuki's historical archive treats 2008 and 2011 as the successive major development points, while the factory manual family 99500-35110 is catalogued for the 2008-2010 generation.

For 2011, Suzuki reduced overall mass, shortened the wheelbase by 15 mm and redesigned the engine, frame, suspension and brakes, clearly separating the next generation from the K8/K9/L0 machines.
