About the Triumph Rocket 3 GT and Rocket 3 R
The Triumph Rocket III arrived in 2004 as a deliberately extreme entry into the cruiser market. Its defining feature was the enormous 2,294 cc longitudinal three-cylinder engine, which at launch gave it the largest production-motorcycle engine in the world. Triumph later described the original Rocket III as having made an immediate impact through its scale, torque, distinctive three-header exhaust and unusual combination of cruiser proportions with surprisingly capable handling.
Triumph expanded the range with the Rocket III Classic, which added a more traditional cruiser-oriented riding position and equipment while retaining the same basic 2.3-litre engine, five-speed gearbox and shaft drive. Triumph's later technical documentation identifies the Classic as a 2006-2009 model family. The factory service manual groups the standard Rocket III and Classic together for most mechanical specifications, including their 142 PS maximum output and 200 Nm torque figure.
The Rocket III Touring arrived for the 2008 model year as a much more comprehensive touring redesign rather than simply a Rocket III fitted with luggage. It received a different chassis, narrower 16-inch wheels and tyres, hard panniers, detachable windscreen and an engine tune focused more heavily on low-speed torque. The manual lists the Touring at 106 PS and 206 Nm, with peak torque arriving at only 2,000 rpm. Contemporary reporting also described the Touring as Triumph's dedicated 2008 big-bagger derivative.
For 2010, Triumph introduced the Rocket III Roadster, which brought further drivetrain, exhaust, braking, instrument and electrical changes, including ABS. Triumph issued a separate service-manual supplement for that motorcycle to be used alongside the 3851160 base manual. This is the key reason the attached 627-page PDF should not be presented as a complete standalone manual for later Roadster and ABS-equipped Rocket III models through 2017.
