Triumph Sprint ST / Sprint RS Service Manual (1999-2001)

Triumph introduced the Sprint ST for the 1999 model year as a new-generation sport-touring motorcycle and successor to the earlier Sprint 900. The ST used Triumph's 955 cc fuel-injected three-cylinder engine in a tune focused on broad road-going performance, combined with a twin-spar aluminium frame, full fairing and single-sided rear swingarm. Period testing positioned it directly against motorcycles such as the Honda VFR800, with the Sprint combining long-distance ability with the distinctive power delivery of Triumph's inline triple.

The Sprint RS followed for the 2000 model year as a lighter and more sport-focused derivative. It retained the 955 cc triple and aluminium frame but used a smaller half fairing, a conventional double-sided swingarm and sharper chassis geometry. Triumph reduced claimed dry weight from 207 kg for the ST to 199 kg for the RS, while changing caster from 25 degrees to 24.5 degrees and trail from 92 to 89 mm. Period reporting described the RS as essentially a lighter, more sporting interpretation of the successful ST platform.

Mechanically, the early ST and RS documented in this service manual are very closely related. Both use the 955 cc DOHC twelve-valve triple, electronic sequential fuel injection, wet multi-plate clutch, six-speed constant-mesh gearbox and chain final drive. The factory specification in this issue gives 110 PS at 9,200 rpm and 97 Nm at 6,200 rpm for both motorcycles, while the main differences lie in their bodywork, weight, rear suspension arrangement and chassis setup.
