Indian Motorcycle Full-Size Repair Manual (2017-2024)

The 2017-2024 Indian full-size platform covers several related cruiser, bagger and touring families built around Indian's Thunderstroke V-twin architecture. At the beginning of the period, the range included the Chief Classic, Chief Vintage and Chief Dark Horse, Springfield, several Chieftain variants and the Roadmaster family. The 2017 motorcycles documented in this manual all use the 1,811 cc Thunderstroke 111, together with six-speed transmissions and belt final drive.

The lineup expanded considerably during the following model years. The Springfield Dark Horse appeared in the 2018 specifications, while the manual also documents premium Chieftain Limited, Chieftain Elite, Roadmaster Classic and Roadmaster Elite variants. By 2019, the Chief range had narrowed to the Vintage and Dark Horse versions, while Springfield, Chieftain and Roadmaster continued as the core full-size families. The manual preserves these changes year by year rather than treating every model as having identical 2017-2024 availability.

A major mechanical transition appears in the 2020 model specifications, when Indian's 1,890 cc Thunderstroke 116 joins the established 111. The 2020 manual data assigns the 111 to models such as the Chief Dark Horse, Vintage, Springfield and Chieftain Classic, while the larger 116 is used on several Springfield Dark Horse, Chieftain and Roadmaster variants. From 2021 onward, the manual continues to distinguish the two engines, with the 116 using a 103.2 × 113 mm bore and stroke, 11.0:1 compression ratio and higher 5,700 rpm rev limit.

By 2022-2024, the full-size range documented here is concentrated around the Springfield, Chieftain and Roadmaster families, including Dark Horse, Limited and Elite derivatives. The R04 publication consolidates eight model years into a single service reference while retaining year-specific procedures and specifications where components changed. Examples include different oil-pressure-switch torque values, 2017 versus 2018+ wiring diagrams, 2017-2019 versus 2020+ suspension procedures, later clutch hardware and updated maintenance information. This makes 9941443 R04 substantially more useful for your catalog than the older 2017-only 9927618 R03 manual.
