Aprilia Scarabeo 50 I.E. / 50 4T / 100 4T Service Manual (2003)

Aprilia created the modern Scarabeo in 1993 around a deliberately different urban-scooter idea: large-diameter wheels, an upright riding position, low running costs and styling that mixed contemporary engineering with retro cues. The company's official Scarabeo history traces the project back to the early-1990s “City Bike” study and records the production debut at the Milan show in September 1993. The concept quickly became one of Aprilia's defining scooter lines and established a long-running high-wheel format aimed at everyday urban mobility.

A major technical expansion arrived in 2000. Aprilia records that the Scarabeo family gained new four-stroke engines, 100 and 200 cc versions, the low-emissions DiTech direct-injection system and a 50 cc four-stroke. This broadened the range beyond the earlier carbureted two-stroke formula and created the engineering context for the early-2000s Scarabeo 50 family. By 2003 buyers could find the same basic small-body concept with a 49.38 cm³ injected two-stroke or a 49.9 cm³ four-stroke, allowing Aprilia to serve different licensing, emissions and operating-cost priorities without abandoning the familiar high-wheel layout.

The Scarabeo 100 extended the same idea with a 96.21 cm³ four-stroke single while remaining physically close to the 50 cc versions. Across the 2003 variants the factory data shows a 780 mm seat height, 16-inch wheels, telescopic front suspension, a hydraulic rear shock and a 220 mm front disc. The 50 I.E. is listed at 92 kg ready for the road, while the 50 4T and 100 4T are listed at 100 kg. All three use a centrifugal clutch and automatic continuously variable transmission, preserving the easy step-through usability central to the high-wheel urban scooter platform.

The powertrains nevertheless give each version a distinct character. The 50 I.E. uses electronic injection with an 18 mm Bing throttle body, separate two-stroke oiling and a 10.5:1 compression ratio. The 50 4T uses a Keihin CVK 17 carburettor, while the 100 4T uses either a Keihin CVK 20 or Dell'Orto PHVD 22 depending on specification. Aprilia continued to develop the small-body Scarabeo family long after this period. Its 2014 range renewal still paired 50 cc two- and four-stroke versions with a 100 cc four-stroke, but with revised styling, equipment and later-generation engine specifications rather than simple carry-over of the 2003 machines.
