About the Honda Varadero and XL125V

Honda introduced the Varadero 125 in 2001 as a full-size small-capacity adventure-road motorcycle rather than a stripped-down commuter. The design borrowed the visual language and long-distance intent of Honda’s larger Varadero and Transalp models, with a protective front fairing, upright riding position, substantial fuel capacity and proportions that made the bike feel larger than most 125s of the period. Contemporary Honda press material positioned it as the flagship of the company’s 125 cc range and emphasized comfort, wind protection and everyday versatility.

The XL125V used a 125 cc liquid-cooled 90-degree V-twin, an unusual configuration in the 125 class. Factory specifications list a 42.0 × 45.0 mm bore and stroke, 11.8:1 compression ratio and two 22 mm constant-velocity carburetors. Drive passed through a cable-operated wet multi-plate clutch, five-speed gearbox and chain final drive. The V-twin layout, together with the relatively large chassis and 17.5-litre fuel tank, gave the model a distinctive identity as a 125 cc adventure-touring motorcycle aimed at riders who wanted more road presence and touring practicality than a conventional learner bike.

The chassis was built around a steel double-cradle frame with a 35 mm telescopic fork and monoshock swingarm rear suspension. Factory service data gives 132 mm of front-wheel travel and 150 mm at the rear, with 18-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels, hydraulic disc brakes at both ends, a 1,450 mm wheelbase and an 802 mm seat height. Despite the adventure styling, the Varadero 125 was primarily road-oriented, using cast wheels and road-biased tyres while still offering generous suspension travel and an upright riding position.

The carbureted JC32 generation remained fundamentally consistent from 2001 through 2006, although Honda made detail and cosmetic changes along the way. Model codes progressed from XL125V1 for 2001 through XL125V6 for 2006. Honda’s own Finnish documentation archive groups the pre-injection machines separately from the later generation, listing XL125V owner and maintenance material for 2001-2006 and then a distinct 2007-2010 group. See Honda’s XL125V documentation archive.

A major technical break arrived for 2007, when the Varadero 125 adopted PGM-FI electronic fuel injection to meet Euro 3 requirements, along with revised bodywork, instruments and related electrical changes. That makes 2006 the natural endpoint for this carbureted service generation. The uploaded 343-page factory manual is the original XL125V1 base publication, but its procedures and mechanical specification are widely catalogued for the 2001-2006 carbureted JC32 range. Related publications are grouped in the Honda XL125V service manual catalog and the Honda Varadero catalog.
