Moto Guzzi Quota 1100 ES Service Manual (1998-2001)

Moto Guzzi developed the Quota as its large-displacement answer to the emerging adventure-motorcycle class of the late 1980s and early 1990s. The concept grew beyond the smaller NTX enduro family into a much larger road-and-travel machine built around Moto Guzzi’s transverse V-twin and shaft-drive architecture. The first production Quota 1000 appeared in the early 1990s, combining a tall riding position, 21-inch front wheel, long-travel suspension and electronic fuel injection with a substantial steel frame. That model established the basic Quota formula before a major capacity and specification update arrived later in the decade.

In 1998 the Quota evolved into the 1100 ES, commonly expanded as Enduro Stradale. The new version used Moto Guzzi’s 1064 cc big-block V-twin with a 92 × 80 mm bore and stroke, 9.5:1 compression and Magneti Marelli IAW 15M sequential electronic injection. Drive passed through a dry twin-plate clutch and five-speed gearbox to the rear wheel by cardan shaft. The 1100 ES was a large, road-biased adventure motorcycle rather than a lightweight trail bike. Its double-cradle rectangular-section steel frame carried a Marzocchi fork with 170 mm of travel, a Sachs-Boge rear monoshock, 21-inch front and 17-inch rear spoked wheels and twin 296 mm front discs. Factory data gives a 1,600 mm wheelbase, 20-litre fuel tank and 245 kg dry weight. Those dimensions, combined with the broad-torque V-twin and shaft final drive, made the Quota a large-capacity Italian adventure tourer aimed at long-distance road use with the ability to handle rougher surfaces.

Contemporary testing shows where the Quota sat in the market. In 2000, Cycle World included the Quota 1100 ES in a large-adventure comparison alongside machines such as the BMW R1150GS, Triumph Tiger, Cagiva Gran Canyon and Honda Varadero. The test highlighted the Moto Guzzi’s distinctive 1064 cc pushrod V-twin, long gearing, substantial proportions and touring-oriented seat, reflecting a period when the adventure class was rapidly becoming a long-distance road category as much as an off-road one.
