Yamaha YZF-R1B Service Manual (2012)

Yamaha introduced the crossplane-crank YZF-R1B generation as part of the sixth-generation YZF-R1 platform that debuted for 2009. That redesign brought a 998 cc inline-four engine with a crossplane crankshaft derived from Yamaha's YZR-M1 MotoGP engineering philosophy, along with a new chassis developed around the company's “Ultimate Cornering Master 1000” concept. For 2012, Yamaha made a significant electronics update by adding traction control to the existing crossplane platform. The system compares front and rear wheel speeds and can intervene through ignition timing, fuel cut-off and YCC-T electronic throttle control. The factory service manual documents six selectable intervention modes plus an off setting, while Yamaha's 2012 model announcement describes the new TCS as technology influenced by the YZR-M1 race program. The motorcycle also retained three D-Mode throttle-response settings, allowing the rider to combine engine-response and traction-control settings for different road conditions. The 2012 engine is a 998 cm³ liquid-cooled DOHC inline-four with a 78.0 × 52.2 mm bore and stroke and a 12.7:1 compression ratio. Electronic fuel injection uses primary and secondary injectors together with Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle and Yamaha Chip Controlled Intake. Power is transmitted through a wet multi-disc clutch, constant-mesh six-speed gearbox and chain final drive. The combination of the crossplane crankshaft, ride-by-wire throttle and traction control makes this generation a crossplane 1000cc supersport motorcycle with a strong emphasis on controllable drive out of corners rather than only peak output.

The chassis uses an aluminum diamond-type frame, 43 mm adjustable front fork, link-type rear suspension and 17-inch cast wheels. Braking is handled by twin 310 mm front discs and a 220 mm rear disc. The 2012 model's electronics, bodywork and front styling were updated while the core 2009-generation engine and chassis architecture remained in place. Yamaha replaced this generation with the fully redesigned 2015 YZF-R1, which introduced a new engine, six-axis IMU and a substantially expanded suite of electronic rider aids.
