Yamaha YZF-R1P / YZF-R1PC Service Manual (2002)

Yamaha introduced the 2002 YZF-R1 as the first major redesign of the original R1 concept since the model's 1998 debut. Yamaha described the new machine as a “Dynamic Cornering Performer,” retaining the compact liter-class supersport formula while substantially revising both engine management and chassis construction. The 2002 model adopted electronic fuel injection for the first time in the R1 line and moved from the earlier Deltabox II chassis to a new Deltabox III frame. Yamaha's official 2002 YZF-R1 launch release identifies it as the third major stage in the model's development and documents the move to fuel injection and the new frame.

The North American variants covered by this manual are the YZF-R1P and YZF-R1PC. Yamaha model codes 5PW4, 5PW5 and 5PW6 identify the USA, California and Canadian specifications. The 998 cm³ liquid-cooled DOHC inline-four retained the 74.0 × 58.0 mm bore and stroke of the preceding generation but used a new electronically controlled injection system in place of carburetors. Yamaha paired the system with revised intake and exhaust components, a titanium exhaust header and EXUP valve control. The result was a fuel-injected 1000cc supersport motorcycle designed to provide more precise throttle response while preserving the strong midrange and compact layout that defined the early R1.

The chassis was also substantially revised. Yamaha's Deltabox III aluminum frame increased torsional rigidity while extensive weight-reduction work was applied across the motorcycle. The factory manual lists a 1,395 mm wheelbase, 43 mm adjustable front fork, link-type rear suspension, 17-inch cast wheels, dual 298 mm front brake discs and a 220 mm rear disc. Wet weight is listed at 193 kg for USA and Canada versions and 194 kg for the California version. The 2002 redesign also brought revised bodywork, lighting, rider ergonomics and instrumentation while retaining the compact proportions and cornering-focused character of the earlier R1.

Yamaha later described the 2002 model as the third-generation YZF-R1 when introducing the fully redesigned 2004 version. That 2004 machine brought another major engineering break with a new big-bore engine, Deltabox V frame and further MotoGP-influenced development.
