Yamaha YZF-R1S / YZF-R1SC Service Manual (2004)

Yamaha introduced the YZF-R1S and YZF-R1SC as the North American versions of the completely redesigned 2004 YZF-R1. Yamaha described the new model as a reborn supersport flagship, built around a new high-performance engine and the Deltabox V aluminum frame. The redesign followed the original 1998 R1, the 2000 revision and the fuel-injected 2002 generation, but went considerably further with a higher-revving engine, underseat exhaust system and a chassis developed around stronger cornering performance. The 2004 engine is a 998 cm³ liquid-cooled DOHC inline-four with a 77.0 × 53.6 mm bore and stroke and a 12.4:1 compression ratio. Compared with the 2002-2003 platform, Yamaha shortened the stroke, increased the bore and raised the operating range while retaining electronic fuel injection. The factory service manual specifies Mikuni 45EIDW throttle bodies and a six-speed constant-mesh transmission with chain final drive. The result was a fuel-injected 1000cc supersport motorcycle designed to combine high-rpm power with the controllability Yamaha associated with the R1 name.

The chassis was equally important to the redesign. Yamaha introduced the Deltabox V frame, revised rigidity balance and mass centralization, and adopted the distinctive underseat exhaust layout that became a visual signature of this generation. Factory specifications list a 1,395 mm wheelbase, 43 mm adjustable front fork, link-type rear suspension and 17-inch wheels. The engine was used as a stressed structural component, helping Yamaha reduce overall chassis weight while increasing rigidity where required for high-speed cornering.

This 2004 generation remained the basis of the R1 for the following model years, but Yamaha changed model designations and issued separate service updates as revisions accumulated. In the United States, the 2005 model is designated YZF-R1T rather than R1S. Yamaha's later 2006 announcement describes the existing R1 platform as the model introduced in 2004 and documents further engine and chassis development for the 2006 version.
