Kawasaki Ninja ZX-9R Service Manual (1998–1999)

The 1998 redesign marked a major change for Kawasaki's ZX9R. The earlier B-series had established the 900-class Ninja as a very fast road-oriented sportbike, but the C-series was reworked to be substantially lighter, more compact and more responsive. Period testing of the 1998 model described an extensive redesign of both engine and chassis, with Kawasaki targeting a much stronger power-to-weight ratio while retaining the stable, usable road manners for which the ZX-9R was already known.

The second-generation machine is built around an 899 cc inline-four sportbike engine with liquid cooling, DOHC cylinder heads and four cylinders. In the factory specifications, bore and stroke are 75.0 × 50.9 mm and compression ratio is 11.5:1. Fuel is supplied by four Keihin CVKD 40 carburetors, paired with transistorized ignition, a wet multi-disc clutch and a six-speed constant-mesh transmission. Final drive is by chain. The chassis uses a tubular diamond frame, 17-inch wheels, a telescopic fork and Uni-Trak rear suspension, with dual front discs and a single rear disc.

The C-series covered the 1998 and 1999 model years before the ZX-9R moved to the E-series for 2000. Kawasaki's official Owner Center records the 1998 U.S. model as ZX900-C1, while the 1999 U.S. model is identified as ZX900-C2. The factory manual itself also shows the ZX900-D1 European configuration alongside the C1, reflecting regional variants within the same generation. The 1998 redesign reduced weight and revised the engine, frame and suspension package rather than simply updating the earlier B-series bodywork.
